What is the difference between PARFUM, EDP, EDT, and EDC?
What do these abbreviations mean and why do they matter? When you enter the world of fragrances, you may come across abbreviations such as EDT , EDP , Extrait de Parfum or Eau de Cologne . At first glance, they seem technical and incomprehensible, but there is more to them than just the level of fragrance intensity — it’s a story about longevity, character, and your personal style. At P.ANIKA, we believe that a conscious choice of perfume is part of the self-care ritual. That’s why we have prepared a short compendium of knowledge to help you better understand what lies behind these labels. 1. Concentration of fragrance oils — the key to intensity Every perfume is a blend of three basic components: essential and aromatic oils (the "heart" of the fragrance), alcohol (the carrier of the scent), water (sometimes omitted or used in small amounts). It is the ratio of fragrance oils that determines whether a given composition is EDT or EDP — or something even lighter like Eau de Cologne . Label Full name Concentration of oils Longevity on the skin Eau de Cologne (EDC) Cologne water 2–5% about 2 hours Eau de Toilette (EDT) Toilet water 5–15% about 3–5 hours Eau de Parfum (EDP) Perfumed water 15–20% about 5–8 hours Extrait/ Parfum Perfume extract 20–30% even 10+ hours 2. What about cologne? Eau de Cologne , or cologne water, is the lightest form of perfuming — usually based on citrus, herbs, and light green notes. It was created with the intention of refreshing, not dominating. Although less long-lasting, it provides an immediate feeling of cleanliness and lightness — perfect for hot days, for a quick refresh after a shower, or as a base layer under other scents. 3. Why are some perfumes EDT and others EDP? It’s not a matter of "better-worse", but of the creator's intention and the character of the composition. . Lighter formulas (EDC, EDT) are often created with daily use, freshness, and discreet presence in mind. In contrast, EDP and extracts are the choice when we want depth, sensuality, and longevity. At P.ANIKA, we consciously select the concentration: If the fragrance is based on delicate green, aquatic, or citrus notes — it will fare better as EDC or EDT. If the heart of the composition consists of heavier resins, spices, or flowers — we choose the EDP or extract formula so that the fragrance can fully blossom and accompany you throughout the day. 4. How to choose the right concentration for yourself? For day, for work, for summer : Eau de Cologne or Eau de Toilette will be subtle companions, not overwhelming the space around you. For evening, for the theater, for special occasions : Eau de Parfum or Extrait will accentuate your presence and leave an elegant trace behind. For travel and self-care rituals : You can mix different concentrations — EDT in the morning, EDP in the evening. Fragrance is a tool for expression and pleasure. 5. Create extracts with us — naturally At the fragrance workshops P.ANIKA , you will not only learn the theory but also create your own natural perfume extract — the purest, deepest form of scent. We work exclusively with botanical ingredients: essential oils, absolutes, and resins. It’s an experience that allows you to feel the fragrance in its most authentic, bodily, and sensual version — without synthetic shortcuts. In summary: There are no "better" or "worse" concentrations — there are only different stories about fragrance, its power, and transience. Choose consciously, according to your lifestyle, the season, and the emotions you want to express. At P.ANIKA, we are here to help you find your ideal formula — or to create it yourself.
